The Evolution of Adaptation in Science and Global Policy: autumn lecture

Part of the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy's 2010-2011 Public Lecture Series

The science of climate change has been assessed every five or so years by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), set up by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and World Meteorological Organization (WMO) in the late 80s, while global policy has been developed under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was signed and ratified by over 190 countries in the early 90s.

In this public lecture, Dr Saleemul Huq talked about the co-evolution of adaptation as a climate change response option in the IPCC and UNFCCC, starting with the IPCC's Third Assessment in 2001, which led to the setting up of adaptation funds in the Marrakech Accords at the seventh Conference of Parties (COP7), then the Fourth Assessment in 2007, the Bali Action Plan at COP13, leading up to COP15 in Copenhagen, and the current situation and upcoming Fifth Assessment due out in 2014.
