Nick is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Climate Change Economics and Policy (CCCEP), involved in project 4b, which examines the pattern and nature of the skills demands linked to the low-carbon transitions, and the nature and extent of any constraints imposed by a lack of an appropriate skills base.
Nick is also finalising a DPhil at the Science Policy Research Unit at the University of Sussex, entitled ‘Forecasting the skills requirements of the low-carbon transition’.
Nick has over 25 years of policy research, including 19 years at the Institute for Employment Studies, examining patterns of high-level skills supply and demand. This research also concentrated on the supply and demand for scientific and technical skills and involved the development and population of international indicators covering Human Resources for Science and Technology and researcher mobility. Another area of interest was the pattern of employer demand for doctoral level skills in the UK.
These interests led, about ten years ago, to secondment to the HM Treasury to work on the Roberts’ Review, examining the supply of and demand for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) skills, which provided a major boost to funding for the training of STEM skills.
