Jouni Paavola

Deputy Director

Jouni's research examines environmental governance institutions and their social justice dimensions, focusing on climate change and biodiversity.

Jouni is also:

  • Professor of Environmental Social Science at the School of Earth and Environment at the University of Leeds;
  • Co-Director of the Sustainability Research Institute at the University of Leeds;
  • Member of the Scientific Committee of the European Environmental Agency;
  • Member of the Board of European Society of Ecological Economics (ESEE);
  • Member of editorial boards on Ecological Economics, Environmental Policy and Governance, Environmental Science & Policy, and Environmental Values.

Background

Before joining the Sustainability Research Institute at Leeds University, Jouni was Senior Research Associate in the Centre for Social and Economic Research on the Global Environment (CSERGE) at the University of East Anglia, and Research Fellow in the Oxford Centre for the Environment, Ethics and Society (OCEES) at Mansfield College.

Prior to this, he was a researcher at Tampere University of Technology in Finland.

Jouni has published his research in journals such as Science, Ecological Economics and Environment and Planning A, and has co-edited three volumes published by Blackwell, MIT Press and Routledge.

Jouni completed an interdisciplinary PhD. in Resource Development (Environmental and Development Studies) in 2000 at Michigan State University in the United States.

  • Analyses of environmental governance institutions, particularly for climate change, biodiversity and ecosystem services;
  • Social justice in environmental matters.
