Ana Lopez

Research Officer

Ana's expertise lies in probabilistic climate change projections and their use in the quantification of future impacts and adaptation to climate change.

She is based at the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment|, where she is a Research Officer, and at the Centre for the Analysis of Time Series (CATS)|, both at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Background

Ana's research focuses on understanding current and future climate risks, and evaluating their plausible changes under a non-stationary climate, with the objective of providing robust and relevant information for adaptation decision making.

Ana's background is in theoretical physics. Her PhD and posterior research experience was based on the study of fundamental properties of different complex highly interactive systems currently relevant for nanotechnologies and quantum computation.

More recently, and before moving to LSE, Ana was based at Oxford University as a Tyndall Research Fellow. Her research focused on exploring the use of large ensembles of climate models to quantify the impacts of climate change on water resources and ecosystems, identifying major difficulties and potentialities to inform adaptation decision making.

Research interests

  • Evaluation of changes in climate risks under non-stationary externally forced climate;
  • Climate model validation and evaluation;
  • Predictability measures and limits to predictability;
  • Temporal and spatial limits for impacts relevant climate model information;
  • Vulnerability approaches to mitigation and adaptation to climate change;
  • Interplay between climate science and decision making under deep uncertainty;
  • Climate change impacts and vulnerability of water resources and food production systems.
