Water resources: Future Nile river flows
Posted on 24 Apr 2017 in In the news
Declan Conway comments on new research published in Nature Climate change on future Nile river flows. The work shows annual Nile flows are projected to increase and importantly, year-to-year variability is also expected to increase markedly. Whilst greater Nile flows would on balance be a good thing, an increase in variability creates a problem for managing reliability of flows and hydropower generation. This comes at a critical time, when the major Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is nearing completion and Ethiopia is recovering from a serious drought associated with the 2015 El Niño event.
