Understanding interpersonal violence: the impact of temperatures in Mexico

Working paper by François Cohen, Fidel Gonzalez on 19 Jan 2018

This research investigates how and why high temperature has an effect on criminality, using data from Mexico. It suggests that the additional crimes committed on hot days are due to changes in time use and habits by both criminals and their victims during times of high temperature. read more »

Socially Just Triple-Wins? A Framework for Evaluating the Social Justice Implications of Climate Compatible Development

Research article by Ben Wood, Lindsay Stringer, Andy Dougill, Claire Quinn on 18 Jan 2018

Climate compatible development (CCD) aims to help people improve their lives in the face of climate threats without exacerbating these threats for current and future generations. It is proving an attractive concept to both academics and practitioners. However, the social justice implications of CCD have not yet been comprehensively explored and an absence of adequate […]

Integrating climate adaptation, water governance and conflict management policies in lake riparian zones: Insights from African drylands

Research article by Uche Okpara, Lindsay Stringer, Andy Dougill on 18 Nov 2017

As river basin authorities and national governments develop policies to achieve sustainable development outcomes, conflicting signals between existing policies are undermining cross-thematic integrative modes of policy planning. This raises fundamental questions over how coherent portfolios of policy interventions across vital themes can best be advanced and managed. Taking the Lake Chad Basin (LCB) as an […]

Assessing coherence between sector polices and climate compatible development: opportunities for triple wins

Research article by Philip Antwi-Agyei, Andy Dougill, Lindsay Stringer on 18 Nov 2017

Climate Compatible Development (CCD) aims to deliver adaptation and mitigation without compromising development progress. To date, adaptation, mitigation and development related to key climate-sensitive sectors have often been treated separately. This paper uses qualitative document analysis, content analysis, expert interviews and a multi-stakeholder workshop to: examine the extent to which policies in climate-sensitive sectors align […]

Uncovering blind spots in urban carbon management: the role of consumption-based carbon accounting in Bristol, UK

Research article by Andy Gouldson, Joel Millward-Hopkins, Kate Scott, John Barrett, Andrew Sudmant on 23 Jun 2017

The rapid urbanisation of the twentieth century, along with the spread of high-consumption urban lifestyles, has led to cities becoming the dominant drivers of global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing these impacts is crucial, but production-based frameworks of carbon measurement and mitigation—which encompass only a limited part of cities’ carbon footprints—are much more developed and […]

Investigating Climate Compatible Development Outcomes and their Implications for Distributive Justice: Evidence from Malawi

Research article by Ben Wood, Claire Quinn, Lindsay Stringer, Andy Dougill on 18 May 2017

Governments and donors are investing in climate compatible development in order to reduce climate and development vulnerabilities. However, the rate at which climate compatible development is being operationalised has outpaced academic enquiry into the concept. Interventions aiming to achieve climate compatible development “wins” (for development, mitigation, adaptation) can also create negative side-effects. Moreover, benefits and […]

The role of intermediaries in low carbon transitions – Empowering innovations to unlock district heating in the UK

Research article by Ruth Bush, Frin Bale, Andy Gouldson, Peter Taylor, William Gale on 23 Apr 2017

The literature on socio-technical transitions considers how technological innovations can be established within the context of an incumbent regime that is often resistant or inflexible to change. Strategic niche management is an approach to catalysing a transition to a new regime using protected ‘niche’ spaces to enable development and experimentation with an innovation. Intermediary actors […]
